Running a Solana validator with a small delegated stake
A well-maintained validator earns commission on delegated SOL plus MEV rebates. Not passive, but repeatable if you like sysadmin work.
How it works
Solana validators earn a slice of network inflation and MEV (Jito) tips proportional to stake delegated to them. Once you attract 40-80k SOL of external delegation via reliability and low commission, monthly income is meaningful. It's an ops job, not a set-and-forget yield.
Step by step
- 1Study the Solana validator docs and Jito-Solana repo before spending a dollar. If SSH, Linux and monitoring stacks aren't comfortable, walk away.
- 2Post 2 SOL bond and provision a bare-metal server with the current recommended specs (32+ cores, 512 GB RAM, NVMe). Budget $600-900/mo for hosting via Latitude or OVH.
- 3Configure jito-solana client, secure key management (Vault or an HSM), monitoring (Prometheus + Grafana + Alertmanager), and PagerDuty for downtime alerts.
- 4Start on testnet for 60 days. Achieve >99% vote credits and zero skipped slots for 3 consecutive weeks before touching mainnet.
- 5Move to mainnet with 5,000-10,000 SOL of your own delegation to bootstrap. Set commission at 5% and MEV commission at 8% — competitive but not desperate.
- 6Apply to the Solana Foundation Delegation Program and Marinade/Jito stake pools. Meeting their SLAs is the main path to delegated stake.
- 7Publish a public status page and a monthly report: uptime, skip rate, vote credits, MEV earned, commission changes. Delegators reward transparency.
- 8Automate failover to a hot spare via a single script and test it monthly. Missing an epoch is what destroys reputation.
- 9Reinvest 20% of monthly revenue into a redundant server in a second datacenter before scaling stake past 100k SOL.
- 10Keep a 12-month runway in stablecoins. Solana price crashes eat SOL-denominated income; ops costs are in USD.
